The Remodel Progress….

The journey began because one young man wanted to move back home.  This was what we started with……it is a long ways from move in ready!!  That was at the end of May.

IMG_0151

Tommy enjoyed this look.  It made the perfect roller rink!!  Prior to looking like this is was stacked to the gills with storage stuff!

  IMG_0152

Next came the digging of the hole for the egress window…..what fun! That took a few weekends in June.

IMG_0263

Then came the collapse of the hole…….oops…

IMG_0283

Finally it was done and we were ready for the window to be installed.

IMG_0328

The fruit if our labors……the egress window!

IMG_0740

We went on vacation in July and when we returned the project had started and the insulation was up….YEAH!  Recessed lighting is installed.

IMG_0757

Next the sheetrock was put up.  It is starting to look like a bedroom.

IMG_0760

Then the walls were taped,  mudded and painted!

IMG_0769

Here is where we are today………..

The hole to right is where the sump pump is and a cabinet is being built above it.  The cabinet door in between the windows is one of the two cabinet doors for the alcove above the sump pump.

IMG_0782

The egress window is done and has a sill now, very nice.  To the right are the closet doors.  To the left is the door covering the electrical panel.   And yes, that window does look like it is centered on the wall now.  Thanks to the wonderful idea of our contractor, Andy to jut the wall out around the electrical panel.  PERFECT!

IMG_0783

This is my bookcase and I LOVE IT!  This was the one thing we had put in for when we move into this room after Josh is out on his own again.  It is a double sided bookscase, on the opposite side when you come in the door there is an identical book case.

IMG_0784

Closet doors were hung and it is starting to look like a closet.

IMG_0785

I can’t wait to see what is accomplished tomorrow!!  It is getting exciting as they are finishing it up.  Then we will have it carpeted and Josh will move in.  His lease is up on the 31st, but it sounds like he plans on moving in the weekend before that so I think he will be on the couch for a bit.

Thanks for stopping by…..

Long To Do List Day…..

I’m Back…… Did ya Miss Me???

Sorry to bail on you during our Back to School series, but life happens.   I came home sick on Friday and just went downhill from there.  I was in bed all weekend.  I was at the Dr on Monday and was diagnosed with a sinus infection and exacerbation of asthma.   I am on antibiotics and starting to feel human again!

But being sick has given a great opportunity to see how doing my morning and evening routine has kept my house somewhat presentable.   If you knocked on my door, I would left you in.  But truthfully, if I knew you were coming I would probably clean up some.  But that is what I think of as lived in!   Life happens and sometimes you let things slide for a few days while you rest.  If you have a system in place your family can keep things running pretty well without you.

So I want to chat a bit about our bedtime routines.  Do you have one???   I struggle to do mine each night as I rather do a million other things, but life goes much better if I just do it!   Story of my life, quit complaining and just do it!

Jen’ Bed Time Routine:
1.  Wash Dishes/Clean Counters
2.  Sweep Kitchen
3.  Make Lunches/ Prep for Dinner
4.  Switch Laundry/ Lay out Clothes
5.  Take Dogs Out
6.  Go To Bed

Do I do each of these items each night??  Nope, life happens, but I try to.  Whatever I don’t get done that night I will do in the morning.   But just doing these few things each night, keep the house presentable enough for us.  The bedtime routine really helps to make my mornings run more smoothly.  I remind myself of this each time I procrastinate and tell myself, “just do it!”.  Tonight is a good night….all items of the routine are done.   I keep my bedtime routine on my yahoo calendar and receive text message reminders as well.

What is your bedtime routine?  If you don’t have one, tell us three things that you would like to do each evening to make your morning go more smoothly!   Now write them down and start implementing your plan!

Household Cleaning.. – the question I always hear is what is the best plan to clean on a regular basis??   We have handled this a number of different ways in our home.  I have practiced the Home Blessing Hour as suggested by the Fly Lady.  You can see examples of Flylady’s routines on her site.

Weekly Home Blessing Hour from Flylady.net

  1. Cull/toss old magazines.
  2. Change sheets.
  3. Empty all the trash.
  4. Vacuum all rooms.
  5. Mop kitchen and bath.
  6. Clean mirrors and doors.
  7. Feather Dust furniture.

I used to do the Weekly Blessing of my home on Fridays as I only worked 1/2 of the day.  Last year I started volunteering at Tommy’s school so I wasn’t able to have the time to do this on Fridays.

The year before that we did the weekly cleaning as a family on Thursday evenings after supper.  It was very quickly done with all of us helping.  We had individual chores that we rotated each week.  You can see the break down of the chores we did on Thursdays on my website.  This worked very well for about 6 months.  Once my hubby started saying he would do his chores the next day, my older boys no longer were cooperative.  If Dad didn’t need to do his chore, why should they.   So to save my own sanity I gave up on this options for weekly cleaning.  But it did work very well while it lasted!

Currently, with working full time and having many evening meetings for church or Tommy’s school, I divide my cleaning up through out the week.   I do my cleaning in the morning before going to work.   If I run out of time in the morning to finish my chore I will finish it in the evening.

Jen’s Cleaning Schedule:
Sunday – Wash Bedding/ Clean Up my Desk/ Fill Med Boxes
Monday – Mop Floors – Kitchen and bathrooms
Tuesday – Feather Dust
Wednesday – Vacuum/ Sweep
Thursday – Clean Bathrooms
Friday – Clean Mirrors, Picture Window and Doors
Saturday – Change Cat Litter/ Errands

The best things about dividing the cleaning throughout the week is that if I miss mopping the floors this Monday as I was just too busy, the rest of the cleaning will still get done and next week I will make sure I mop the floors.  When we were doing cleaning on Thursdays, if we missed a Thursday, we missed doing all the chores for the week, not just one chore.

IMG_0766

My cleaning schedule is on the side of my fridge and I add items as I need to.  I am a very visual person so I need things out where I will see them. to remember to do them.

IMG_0767

The side of the fridge is the place where I keep most of the information to keep me organized.  The pink sheet is the list of frequently called numbers.  Our family calendar, car keys and pens can all be found here as well.

So as you can see, there is no right way to do your cleaning.  It is simply what works for your life at this time and that can change from time to time, so our routines need to change as well.

HOMEWORK:   Decide on a bedtime routine, write it down and start implementing it this week.  Hopefully it will be running smoothly for you by the time school starts!   Decide how you would like to do your cleaning.  What will work in your life as it is today?   The best way to get started to is write down your plans!   Grab a piece of paper and write down your bedtime routine and your plan for weekly cleaning.

I look forward to hearing how all of you are doing, so please check in with the group!!

I frequently get comments that my house must be so clean.  Like I said I wouldn’t die if you stopped by, but it isn’t perfect and never will be.  It took me a while to get to a place in my life where I realized that good enough….is good enough.  This from a recovering perfectionist!

IMG_0772

I try to keep the coffee table cleaned off.  It drives me nuts to have it covered with things.  But to keep it clean I have to put everyone elses things away each morning and evening.

IMG_0773

My dishes are washed and drying on the counter.  No dishwasher here, but my two hands.  When I get up in the morning I will put the dishes away.  I wouldn’t be embarassed if you came over and saw my dishes drying, at least they are clean.

IMG_0775

Laundry….I always have clothes waiting to be washed.  All clothes are picked up off the floors of the bedrooms each night and put down the laundry chute.  Each morning when I start a load of laundry I sort the few items that came down the night before.  I sort my clothes by person or room.  Each basket is for a different person.  This makes it easier for me to wash and put away the clothes in the right room when washing for so many people.  It also allows me to give the basket to the owner and ask them to take it to their room and put them away!   Mom doesn’t have to do it all….delegate!

Hope you enjoyed seeing a glimpse into my home.

Blessings…

Papers here, papers there….

The start of school brings paper and more paper into your home.As if it isn’t hard enough to keep up with the mail, now add daily school papers!

Last year I had a folder for each child and the things I was involved in.This did not work well for me at all.I would always forget the folder I needed and wouldn’t have it with me.So this year I re-vamped my system.I do that a lot, I try one way for a year or 6 months and if that doesn’t work for me, I change it.I am always looking for the best way that will work for me!!

This year I have a three ring binder that is very colorful.I can always find it on my desk.I have 5 sections in my binder to organize my papers. The following are my current sections:

1.MPTP – Parent Organization (I am treasurer)

2.Tuition Bucks/Scrip Program(I am Co-coordinator)

3.School Info (Tommy and Erik’s school info including school calendar and phone #)

4.Book Group – (I am secretary – I send out the reading list, etc)

5.Blog/Website/Internet – notes about blog items/ideas

IMG_0761 IMG_0762

I take this binder with me to work each day.If I need information for any of things I am involved with, it is right with me.For me it is all about containing papers for easy location. In the front pocket of my binder I keep short term items that I might need to refer back to such as invitations.

School Papers – each year I start a new file folder in my file cabinet to keep art projects and special school papers from the year.Ever art item Tommy brings home does go onto the closet door along with the monthly calendar items that are there. He likes to showcase his items for a while including his spelling test for the week!

Mail – I will admit I only go through my mail once a week.I let it pile on the table/desk at home until the weekend and then I clear it off and organize things.

Phone Numbers:Each year I update the list of important phone numbers kept on the side of our fridge.I make sure all numbers for school, bus company and medical providers are on there. This has been very helpful to my hubby so he can very quickly call the school or bus company if one of the kids is sick.

I know there was more I wanted to about this subject…..can’t think of it, right now.  Share with us how you keep the important papers of your life organized!!

HOMEWORK:  Make a deicision about what system you feel will help you keep your paperwork together for this upcoming school year.  Is is a folder, a 3 ring binder or something else?  Get whatever you would like to use ready for the school year!

Questions/ Comments – 8/3/09

Hello Everyone – Happy Monday!   I did not work as late as I had planned tonight, since I started feeling ill at work.  The good thing is I can post this and head to bed.

QUESTIONS:

How do you cook so much from scratch? Do you do OAMC?

I cook a lot from scratch simply because it is cheaper and I love to cook.  I also cook from scratch due to my having IBS.  I frequently get sick when I eat processed food.  I use a few shortcuts in prep to make it a bit easier for me.  On the weekends I will brown any hamburger that I need during the week and freeze it.  I also do this with cooked chicken.  I will boil a 3 pound bag of chicken on the weekends if needed.  It is great to have cooked hamburger and chicken by the pound ready in your freezer.  I also try to have chopped onions and green peppers and flash freeze them to speed up prep.

During the week I try to make easy things for supper, 30 minutes or less of cooking.  I get home about 5:45 and we will like to eat between 6:30 and 7:00.  I try to do as much prep as I can for supper the night before.  If we are having a casserole I assemble it the night before and call home to have one of my children put it into the oven.  I am also lucky in that my hubby will help with supper prep some nights.  I also use the Crockpot to cook meals while I am at work.  I make more elaborate meals on the weekend.

I have done OAMC off and on.  It is hard for me to take the time to really do that.  My hubby also prefers freshly made food over the OAMC things I have made.  I will make an extra casserole for the freezer here and there when I am able to.

COMMENTS:

Big Shop Day

Michele (MSheriff) – I used to shop weekly for groceries and found that for me I spent more money that way.  The less I am in the store the less I spend.  I actually want to try to grocery shop only once a month instead of twice.  I would buy everything for the month but would need to buy fresh produce once a week.  Right now my kids know that if they drink all the pop or eat the snacks all at once, there will not be more for 2 weeks.   I am able to take all my children if needed to go shopping.  I would rather just go by myself and get it done fast and with less arguing.   This last weekend on our big shop day it was my hubby and our youngest son that went.  My middle stepson was at his mother’s for the weekend.

Like you, my youngest goes to a school with uniforms.  I only needed to buy pants and shorts this year as the shirts from last year still fit.  My stepson goes to regular school and we usually take him to pick out 4-5 shirts, 1 sweatshirt and 2 pairs of jeans for the year.   I bought him shoes recently so we won’t need to do that for a few months.  I usually buy him 2 pairs of tennis shoes a year.

Trouble cat – thanks for joining us!!  Check in with us and let us know how you are doing!  Congrats on getting up earlier.  That is a hard one…I am doing a bit better with that as well.  Still more work needed in that area!

CALENDARS

Michele (MSheriff) – I love the MIT’s!  It is so interesting to hear someone else mention this concept.  When training new social workers, I always tell them to define success of their day not by getting their “to do list” done, but by getting the top 3 things done.  Each morning when I get to work I make my Top 3 list and don’t go home until I do them!

Budgeting, that is always a hard one.  I have tried many ways to do this.  I was a single mom of one for a long time and struggled with budgeting.  We have a pretty good system right now that is working for us.  I will share it later in this series.  Maybe parts of it will work for you too!

I am excited to look at your binder when I get home.  I can’t get into photos from my work computer.  They are blocked.   I just started a new binder idea this year so I am interested in chatting about that with you.  I plan on blogging about my binder and some other things on Wednesday.  And of course I plan on taking pictures of it!!

Cherlyn P – I love the idea of “my Brain Calendar”.  My family always puts important papers and appointments on the keyboard of my laptop.  This doesn’t work well for me as I move the papers to use my computer and misplace them.  I should put a magnet on the fridge for those types of things!  What a great idea.   Thanks!  See, I learn from each of your as much as your learn from me.

MORNING ROUTINES:

MSheriff – I am totally amazed by your morning routine.  For not being a morning person you sure are able to get up and out the door quick.   I wish I could do that!!  I am so jealous!

“It may be a crazy life. But it is OUR life.” – SO TRUE!!

Patty – Glad you joined us.  I am so sorry about your health troubles.  You and your family will be in my prayers.   How did it go for you this week to follow your old morning routine??  Take it one day at a time and remember it is ok to have an off day….just give it another try the next day and delegate anything you can.  I am trying to delegate this year.  I am not the only one that can put dishes away or do laundry.  I am hoping this trend continues.  I am having my middle son do a small chore each day including his own laundry.  My BIL helps by putting the dishes away each day and clearing the table and rinsing dishes each night.   I have to let go of my perfectionism and just be thankful for the help.  This is a struggle for me.  I am tempted to say, “Never mind, I will just do it” or “could you do it this way?” because I want things done a certain way.

The Big Shop…

Today is our one of our big errands days of the the month.  I am super happy with how well we did!!

First, we went to the Library and I got two books I have been wanting to read.  The Cradle by Patrick Somerville and Dear Neighbor Drop Dead by Saralee Rosenberg.  I read about the Cradle in bookmarks magazine and Katie was reading the other books and it sounded like a fun read!

After the library we hit Walmart.  We did most of Tommy’s school shopping.  We bought 3 pairs of uniform shorts @ $10, 6 uniform pants @ $12.00 and 1 pair of black dress pants @ $11.00.  Last year I bought uniform pants at Donald’s, Old Navy, Sear and Walmart.  The only ones that made it through the year were the ones from Donald’s and the ones from Walmart.  The ones from Walmart have double reinforced knees, a must for my guy.   And yes, I buy alot of pants.  I only want to do laundry on the weekends for school!  So we spent $113.00 on pants and shorts for the year for Tommys.  That will be all the clothes he will get for school.

Next we did our grocery shopping for the next two weeks.  We shopped at Walmart, Bread Thrift Store, Aldi and Festival.

Groceries for the next two weeks:

Walmart – snacks and drinks – 24.80

Bread Thrift Store – $3.00

Aldi – $ 81.15

Festival  – $ 22.77

TOTAL SPENT: 131.72 or 65.86/week  or $26.34 /person for two weeks!

I will save up the leftover money for groceries to use for items throughout the week or to buy meat in two weeks.  I started using visa gift cards for groceries so it is easy to set aside the money for next time.

I am off to clean up the kitchen a bit so I can read my book for a while.  Hope you are having a wonderful day!

My Wonderful World of Calendars…

Before we get started on today’s topic, I am wondering how you are doing with your morning routines?  Come on fess up?  I have been getting up at the time on my morning routine since Monday and it is getting easier for me.  My mornings are going better so I know this is worth it.  This morning I was done early!!  That never happens and I even put a roast in the crockpot for French Dip sandwiches.  If my mother is reading this she can personally attest to the how amazing this is, but I am caught up on my laundry!  This morning I went down there and washed sheets since I didn’t have enough clothes for a load.  Trust me, usually you can’t even get into my laundry room.  My mom has come to stay before and always would get me caught up on laundry, but it only lasted for a week or so.This time I got caught up on my own, just by doing my morning and evening routine!

Now, on to calendars!  Over the years I have tried many different things to get track of the many aspects of my life.  I am very happy with my current system.  I have tried to only have one calendar and that has not worked for me.  I am very visual, so I need to see the month at a time.

100_1825At home, I have what I call calendar central or you might call it the side of my fridge.

I have had the same calendar on the side of the fridge for about 8 years and I LOVE IT!I am a former flybaby (follower of Flylady at Flylady.net).  Every year I purchase a calendar from the Flylady shop.It is a great calendar with large boxed to write in.  It is great for keeping all the family stuff on.  This is the calendar that hubby and kids look at to see what is coming up.  You can look at and purchase this calendar here. http://www.flylady.net/pages/FlyShop_calendar.asp

I used to try to keep my home chores and everything on my calendar as well and I no longer do that.  I use Yahoo Calendars (free online at http://calendar.yahoo.com/) as I showed you in my morning routine post on Wednesday.  I enter my weekly cleaning jobs as well as monthly and yearly items on my yahoo calendar and have them reoccur as needed.

I just discovered something very cool about Yahoo Calendars.  This is a life saver for me.  If you are familiar with the techniques of the Flylady, you know how important a timer can be.  At home I use a timer to remind me that I have clothes in the washer and many other things.  With Yahoo Calendars I can set up each item of my morning routine with a reminder that is texted to my cell phone –free of charge!  I do have unlimited texting on my phone.  I tend to get absorbed in a task and lose track of time.  Now in the morning my phone texts me to say “Get out Of BED”, and then at 5 minutes before I should be switching laundry my phones texts me “Switch Laundry/Empty Trash.  You might think this is obsessive, and maybe it is, but it has been so very helpful to me.  I easily get sidetracked.  I also use the Yahoo calendars to remind me to do things I forget.  I just set a reminder for at noon each day that says “take medication”.

Ok, I might as well reveal all my geeky tendencies.  I also use yahoo calendars at work.  Each morning I decide what I need to get done and set them in my Yahoo calendar so I stay on track.  So if I am setting aside 1 hour to respond to email, I set that into my yahoo calendars and set an alert for the next task as well.  This way time does not get away from me and I only spend 1 hour on email and then I move on to my next task when my phone texts me and says to start the next task.  I have been WAY more productive at work using this technique.

Work Calendar:  I do keep a paper calendar that I carry with me everywhere!  I use a Weekly/Monthly Planner that runs from July 2009 – June 2010.  I am too busy in January to change calendars so I use an academic one.  I write anywhere I have to be on this calendar.  This includes work, church and personal commitments.  phone

My work also likes if I enter my calendar onto my outlook.  They want to know where I am as I can be out of the office at appointments a lot of the time.  My son convinced me that I needed a smart phone and now I wouldn’t be without it!  I sync my smart phone to my outlook at the office so I know what is going on and have all my contacts with me as well.  Very Handy!

What to do with the various school and soccer calendars??

I enter all the dates on the school calendar on my work calendar.  My kids are in two different schools that have different schedules.  I enter everything in and put the original calendar away for safe keeping, more on th100_1824at later.

For the monthly school lunch menu and the classroom schedule for Tommy, I have that hanging on a closet door by the door so we can review it each day on our way out of the house each day.

Wow….just typing this up I am realizing how much it really takes to keep me this organized.  If you wear less hats in life you might be able by with less, but I have many hats and it takes a bit to keep me on track.  Oh how my mind wanders!

Please share with us your ideas to keep yourself organized.   I look forward to hearing for each of you!

HOMEWORK:  Find a calendar that will meet your needs and start filling in important dates for the upcoming school year.   The best way to start using a calendar is to have one!!  The Home School Mom has some free online planners to get you started. The website My Free Calendar Makers has all formats of calendars: yearly, monthly, weekly and daily.

Stop by on Monday for Reader’s Questions Day.  You have a question and I will answer.  Please leave your question in the comments of this post and I will answer your question on Monday, August 3, 2009.

Have A Great Weekend!
