In The MailBag: Budget Chat

I know I have been missing from blogging lately, so I thought a good way to get back to blogging is to answer some reader mail!   So you know me, I am mostly an open book, so ask away and maybe your question will be answered!   I am trying to do better at answering questions, really….I am .

I read the questions below and thought….man what a great blog this would make!   LOL!!

Do you have a budget for everything? Do you focus on only a few? My husband and I with the best intentions have a hard time managing different budgets from one account. do you have any ideas on what works for you?

I would say we have a loose budget for most things.  I have a debt reduction plan.  I use a Rapid Debt Reduction Calculator on a site called Debt Proof Living.  I took all my current loans and credit card debt at the their minimum payment plus an additional $100 a month and that is what I put towards debt each month.  This is not a free site.  My oldest son made an impressive debt repayment plan from a free site.   It uses the same principle of snowballing your debt repayment and sets up a debt repayment plan for you. 

In our house one of us is paid each week, so I actually work on a weekly budget.   I have a bill paying sheet similar to the one below for each pay period in the month that details what needs to be paid each pay period.  This works for us….we seem to live week to week or paycheck to paycheck.

Each week I set aside $100 in cash in our grocery envelope.  I also purchase $25 Walmart Gift Card each week for any household items that need to be purchased at Sam’s or Walmart.  I save them up from week to week until I go to the store.  That is how I budget for groceries and household things.  We also budget our gas purchasing this way.  We buy the same amount of SA gift cards each week.  We purchase all our gift cards through a program through our son’s school so we get a portion back towards his tuition.  This year we were able to cover just over one month of tuition with the earnings from our purchasing gift cards through the program.  I will always take free money!!

I also set aside out of each paycheck 1/4 of the cost of our house payment so we can spread the larger expenses out over the entire month.   I do the same with School Tuition and Child Support for my stepson.  I put a bit away each week until the payment is due.

We have a separate checking account (Freedom Account) that we put the money we are saving so we don’t accidently spend it.  We keep a accounting of all the money in that account and what it is set aside for.   It is sort of like a virtual envelope system.   Below is a sample of common categories in our virtual envelope system.  The total at the bottom should be the same as the total in that checking account.   I use online banking so I am able to move money very easily from account to account.

The other things that is a vital part of our budget working is FUN MONEY.   We have a set amount that each week goes to myself and my hubby that we do whatever we want with.  Neither of us is allowed to come down on the other regarding the choices the other makes with that money.   What I deem as FUN is different than my hubby’s idea of FUN!

Focus???   I focus on my debt repayment plan and continue to pay the same amount each month.  That plan when you set it up has you continue to pay the same minimum payment even as the minimum due decreases.   I focus on one debt paying an extra $100 to that one.  Once that is paid off I take all the money that monthly would go to that debt and apply it to my next debt to pay off.  This is the snowballing principal.

My hubby and I have come up with a system that works for us.  What works for us is to have three checking accounts.   My hubby has a checking account that is his.  He only uses this account for his FUN MONEY.  I move it into there each week and he budgets that.  We agreed a long time ago what our set FUN MONEY amount is and adjust it as needed when one of us has something going on like going out with friends or something.  This is pretty infrequent.   We each also get a SA gift card each week to pay for our gas for the week. 

  I have a checking account which is our Household Account in which I pay all of our bills out of.  I take my FUN MONEY out in cash and use the envelope system for that and our grocery money.   The third checking account is what we call our Freedom Account.   This is where we transfer all the funds we are saving for future payments that month, such as 1/4 of our house payment each week.  Then the payment comes due, I transfer the funds from the Freedom Account online into the Household Account to make the payment.  

This is what works for us…..maybe bits and pieces of it will work for you!   If you have more questions, just let me know!!

Financial Chat

dbet  Saturday was grocery shopping day.   I budget $100/ week for groceries to feed my family of 5 or 6 depending on the day.   My key to success is menu planning and to only buying what I will need for the next two weeks.   Only buying groceries every 2 weeks seems to help keep us within budget.  The less I am in the store, the less I will spend.  

We had way more food spoil the last two weeks than I would like to see.  What a waste of money.  ARGH!  So I am buying the produce I need for the second week the following week.  So I am in the store each week, but I try to stick to the list!  Another issue is that the leftovers aren’t always getting eaten in a timely fashion.  Now that I am using the menu service, E-Mealz.com to plan our meals, the servings are smaller and less wasted food.  I am also making Tommy’s and my lunch when clearing off the table each night so I am remembering to use the leftovers!

Sam’s Club –          $77.24 ( taco Seasoning, Cooking Spray, Granola Bars, Oxy Clean, Creme Pies, and Ramen) 
Aldi                       $149.32

Total Spent for 14 days – $226.56  = $16.18/Day or 113.28/ week

I was a bit over my budget, but last week I was under and had money left over.   I still have $80 remaining in my grocery envelope so I am good.  I still have a couple of things I need to pickup later in the week.  I am waiting to buy the produce for the second week of my menu, to hopefully decrease the food spoilage.

Other information on the budget front I am done paying one of my debts off.  I owed my parents some money and that is done!  I was paying them $50/week so that budgeted item will move to be added to our Emergency Fund.  I will have to write a post sometime about our budgeting technics.  All I have to say is if I knew what I knew now before…I would be in very different financial situation today!   Live and Learn….I guess.

We use the snowballing technic to pay off our debts.  So once one debt is paid, you roll that minimum payment over to the next thing.  At the same time we are building up our savings.  I do my savings a bit different than suggested by Dave Ramsey or Mary Hunt.  I ear mark the money in my savings.  Like I had $1600 set aside for car insurance.  If I pay for the car insurance 6 months at a time, I get a $250 reduction.   So I have a years worth of car insurance in my savings account at the beginning of the year courtesy of our tax return.  I also earmark $800 – $1000 for Christmas expenses and finally a emergency fund.  The emergency fund I add to as often as I can to cover the unexpected car repair or whatever.  

Our goal is to be debt free within 10 years including house.  We have some expenses to consider in the future.  We have to decide if we will be continuing our son in private school after Jr High.   We also would like to do one last major remodel to the house before we retire.  Then we will be focusing on saving for retirement.

I was able to do a nice consolidation of two of my credit cards, which saved me 10% in interest for the life of the balance.  So that was helpful to us in meeting our financial goals.   So I am reminding myself to be a good steward of the gift God has given us and live within our means!  Be content in the simple things in life…..you will be much happier.  I know I am!

It is all about choices..and I hope I am teaching my children these lessons as well.  Our children see frugality as normal. We make dinners at home, plan a menu weekly – dinners at home are normal and eating out is a very special treat. Making our own meals at home is normal – it’s normal to see mom in the kitchen preparing supper.  A night of drive through is a rare treat.   It’s normal to go to the library each Saturday.  It’s normal to spend an evening playing a board game or renting a movie from redbox.  It is a treat to go to the movie at the theater.   They do not see rampant overspending as the norm. When we do make a major purchase, our children are probably getting sick of the conversation about the purchase.  My kids can attest to this.  It took me five years to finally purchase a Kindle…and we had alot of discussions about it and comparing it to the Nook, etc.  I hope my children are picking up on the lessons I am trying to teach them.

I hope our children also understand  why we’re doing this. When I was growing up, we practiced a lot of frugality, but the “why” of practicing that frugality was often simply that we didn’t have enough money.  And I knew my lifestyle was different from other children because we didn’t have as much.  I wore garage sale clothes not by choice.  But I did learn valuable saving technics from my parents, but didn’t chose to use them until much later than I would have liked.   When I finally had money I wanted to use it because I felt I went too many year without and I wanted to give the world to my children.  I realized very quickly that the best thing I could do for my children was to teach them these financial principles and prepare them for the realities of life.

For our family, frugality enables us to spend less than what we earn without giving up things that are really important to us. What is important to us may not be the same as your family….but that is ok.  We are a techy family!  We chose to spend alot of money on computers, Internet and other electronics.  We don’t have to be frugal – we choose to do it because of the life it’s creating for us.  I also hate being called frugal….because I am not in some regards.  I just try to be financially responsible.   As a family we spend more money on electronics than the average family, which is not frugal, but I do have a son and hubby who work in the IT field.  We chose not to deprive ourselves, just to make thoughtful decisions about the things we want in our lives.  If we stay the course with our debt reduction plan, real opportunities will open up to us, just in time for our children to see the real benefits of a financially responsible life.    I wish my parents would have sat down and had these discussions with me.  Just this weekend Josh and I were discussing some financial strategies on consolidating his student loan.  His goal is to save for a down payment on a house.  I wish I knew what he does, when I was 22!

I am really liking using the menu service, E-Mealz.com to plan our meals.  The portions for the recipes are smaller and I find that we are eating less too.   It has made planning and shopping so much easier.  The meals are also very quick to make, great after a full day at work.  I really like having the sides planned for me as I seem to make the same thing over and over.

Recipe: Grilled Shrimp….

Tonights meal is worth blogging about.   It was a very, very simple meal that is sure to impress.  Yummy!  This year we have been trying many different things on the grill.  It all has been great so far.   This Grilled Shrimp is wonderful when grilled on cedar planks.   I told the guys this is a total date meal.  If some guy makes this easy meal, he will certainly impress his date!

After marinating 3 pounds on shrimp, we put them on the grill on Cedar Planks.

How yummy do those look??? 

Grilled Shrimp

3 lb frozen raw shrimp, thawed, peeled and deveined (3 @ 3.99 = $11.97)
3/4 C olive oil
1 -1/2 Tablespoon dried basil
6 cloves of garlic, chopped
3 Tablespoons of vinegar
1-1/2 Tablespoons Worchestershire Sauce

Mix oil, basil, garlic, vinegar and Worcestshire Sauce together in a large bowl.  Add Shrimp and toss.  Marinade and refrigerator for 2 hours before grilling.  Place shrimp on skewers and set hot grill.  Grill 10 minutes without turning on cedar planks.

Cran-Peach Romaine Salad

2 bags Romaine Lettuce (2 @ 1.89 = $3.78)
2 peaches, diced  (2 @ .25)
1 pkg of dried cranberries  (1.39)
Ranch Almonds Salad and Veggie Topper  (1.99 – used 1/2 = 1.00)
Balsamic Vineigrette dressing –  (.99 – used 1/2 = .50)

Toss Lettuce with peaches, dried cranberries and almonds.   We served our dressing on the side. 

The best part about this meal, in addition to it being wonderful is that everything can be bought at Aldi! 

Salad ingredients were about 7.17 and Shrimp about 13.00.  =  Total cost of Meal = 20.17 or 3.36/person.  All the shrimp was eaten, with only a couple servings of salad left. 

And hubby said the Shrimp was as yummy as Red Lobster…..but we spent so much less!!

dbet  Today was grocery shopping day.   I budget $100/ week for groceries to feed my family of 5 or 6 depending on the day.   My key to success is menu planning is to only buying what I will need for the next two weeks.   We had way more food spoil the last two weeks than I would like to see.  ARGH!  The leftovers aren’t always gettin eaten in a timely fashion.  I need to remember to bring my lunch more often to work.  Tommy usually takes leftovers to daycare too!

Total Spent for 14 days – $145.09  = $10.36/Day or 72.54
