LORI – I just finished the book “Desert Flower”. It was disturbing in parts but interesting. I find it fascinating to read about other cultures. And in my work I work with many families from different cultures. I recently started working with a Somalia family so was looking for books. Desert Flower is the story of the life of Waris Dirie, who was a desert nomad in Somalia who ran away and eventually after many turns of events ended up in Lodan and became a model. She is a supermodel and a United Nations special Ambassador who travels the world to speak out against female circumcision. A practice still done to young girl in Africa. Waris talks about the many health problems she has due to this practice.
In’Shallah, if God willing, it will happen.
Now to decide which book for read next……..off to watch a movie with hubby. We rented Hide and Seek with Robert Deniro.
Ah, yes! I remember reading about her case years ago. The book looked interesting, trying as I am to relate to Africans these days. I’ll look for it at the library.
